Sacrament of Baptism: Parents must be registered members of the parish for at least six months.  Attendance at the preparation session is required for parents and strongly recommended for godparents.  Classes are held on the first Sunday of each month, following the 11:00 am Mass, in the parish office conference room (accessible from Connecticut Avenue).  Call the office to register for the class. Please do not set any dates or make other arrangements until you have attended the preparation session.

Sacrament of Marriage: Must be registered/participating parishioners.  Diocesan policy is that a period of six months be allowed for preparation.  Please do not set a date until you have met with the pastor.

Sacraments for the Sick: When ill health or age prevent you from receiving the Sacraments, please inform us of your needs and location whether at home, in a care facility or hospital. We are only able to serve you when YOU request the parish office to do so. Anointing of the Sick is for people who are ill, facing surgery, or advanced in years. It should be celebrated before entry into the hospital if possible. Please call the Parish Office to make an appointment as soon as you know you have a need for this Sacrament.

St. Anthony's Houses the Homeless
St. Anthony of Padua hosts homeless families of Moore County through our fellowship with Family Promise. This is a very important ministry. St. Anthony's joins several area churches taking turns providing overnight lodging and meals on a rotating basis. Currently we are asked to host families for one week every three months. Volunteers are always needed. If you would like to become an Family Promise volunteer there are many ways you can help. You can prepare a meal, read or tutor a child, help a parent write a resume, or stay overnight with guests.  You will make a difference in the lives of families that have suffered the loss of their homes. If you would like more information about volunteering contact Mary Burgess through the parish office.

Preparation  For  First Holy Communion: 1st grade students (and 2nd grade students who did not attend  R.E. last year) will begin the two year preparation process for FHC this year. It is critical that they register and attend RE classes regularly on Sunday, or attend PJPII Catholic School. Older students will need to attend Children's RCIA to prepare for their sacrament. Details available from the DRE. Children who attended the K class the previous year, do not need to reregister. A copy of each child’s Baptismal Certificate must be on file in the RE office.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In order for your child to receive proper instruction in the Faith all students should attend religion classes every year from K--12th grade.  All students must be adequately prepared and meet the requirements before they will be allowed to receive the sacraments.  Generally our children receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in the second grade.  Children past the second grade who have not received First Reconciliation or First Holy Communion will be required to attend classes for their regular grade on Sunday, or as a student in Pope John Paul II Catholic School as well as Children's R.C.I.A. classes.  Confirmation is presently celebrated in the tenth grade in our parish. We follow the direction given by The Most Reverend Michael Burbidge in the preparation process for all sacraments. Please contact our Director of Religious Education, Diana Wake for students in grades K-6 and our Youth Minister, Barbara Kemple for students in grades 7--12.

BAPTISM CERTIFICATES NEEDED:  We must have a copy of every child’s baptism certificate on file in the Religious Education office, even if they were baptized here. This is most important for children who have not yet received Holy Communion or Confirmation.

Pope John Paul II Catholic School Achieves Five-Year Accreditation
as published in The Pilot, July 12, 2009

Pope John Paul II Catholic School in Southern Pines earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED.

To earn accreditation, schools must meet SACS CASI standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement.

An accredited school adheres to high quality standards based on the latest research and successful professional practices.

"Earning accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents, parish and community that Pope John Paul II is focused on providing excellence in student education," said Dr. Rick Kruska, principal for Pope John Paul II. "Our school provides a learning environment which fosters character development and leadership skills taught by only licensed educators," he said.

The school was specifically commended on its acquisition, access and use of a wide array of instructional technology.

The SACS CASI committee also commended the school on its significant level of stakeholder involvement in school planning and overall operations.

"The staff was very proud that the accreditation team acknowledged our dedication to teaching the 21st century child," Kruska said. "While they were impressed that we have Smart Boards in all of our classrooms, they praised how the teachers and students actually use technology in daily lessons."

Parents who choose a school accredited by SACS CASI understand that the school is committed to raising student performance and are accountable for improving student learning on a continual basis.

"When Dr. Kruska was hired to be the principal ten short months ago, I knew he would put the school on the path to greatness," said the Rev. Msgr. Jeffrey A. Ingham. "He is committed to a Christ-centered education experience for our children, and will constantly evaluate ways to help our teachers and students excell in all aspects of the school."

SACS CASI accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school but also assures parents that the school is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice.

Dr. Mark Elgart, president/CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of SACS CASI, stated, "SACS CASI accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners.

"Pope John Paul II Catholic School is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement."

The school has been recommended for a five- year accreditation term based on the SACS's review of the school's self study and their on-site visit.

SACS CASI accredits more than 13,000 schools and school systems throughout the United States and overseas.

St. Anthony Names School After Pope John Paul II
CONTRIBUTED

Padua Catholic School, currently located on the grounds of the church in downtown Southern Pines, has been granted permission by Bishop Gossman of the Raleigh Diocese to change the school’s name to “Pope John Paul II Catholic School.”

The parish name in Southern Pines will remain “St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.”

“The life and ministry of the former Pope is one of the greatest examples of a life totally dedicated to serving God,” Ingham said. “And the school’s new name will inspire current and future students and parents to remember him as a model of Christian service.”

The Pope John Paul II name will be carried over to the new school now planned to be located on the church’s property at Camp Easter Road in Southern Pines. Plans call for an elementary school that will accommodate up to 250 students in grades pre-K through 8.

The projected cost of the new construction ranges between $5 million to $7 million and will provide classrooms, computer and science laboratories, a media center, a dining room and a small chapel. Outdoor ball fields and play areas will also be included.

“Expanding the Pope John Paul II Catholic School to a regional school is important to accommodate those seeking to enroll their children in a Catholic school,” Ingham said. “With more young families moving into our area because of business opportunities or association with the military, the Catholic community in the Sandhills continues to grow each year.

“The new school will not only serve families in the parishes of St. Anthony of Padua and Sacred Heart Catholic churches but reach out to parishes and Catholic families in Northern and Eastern Moore County and other neighboring counties.”

St. Anthony’s school Principal Paul J. Rizzo emphasized that the mission of the school remains true to its founding purposes and is a vital consideration to parents who come to enroll their children.

“It is extremely important to provide a religious education program supporting Catholic and parental values and to achieve academic excellence through high standards, expectations and exceptional motivation,” Rizzo said. “The school has a great advantage because parents, the school educators and administrators agree on the moral and intellectual virtues upheld.”

The new facility expansion is needed to meet the increased demands for Catholic education in the region at all grade levels. Rizzo noted that Pope John Paul II Catholic School has waiting lists in three of its grade levels.

Anyone interested in obtaining information about the school or making memorial and tribute gifts can contact Ingham at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church School in Southern Pines at 692-6613.
