SASHYG FAQ’S
What is SASHYG? SASHYG is the combined youth group of the two Catholic churches in Moore County. It is for high school students, both in traditional or home school situations. SASHYG stands for St. Anthony Sacred Heart Youth Group. SASHYG was formed by a group of students and is student run with several adults serving as advisers.
When and where are SASHYG youth group meetings? SASHYG normally occurs the second and fourth Sunday evenings of the month from 6-8 p.m. We take turns meeting at the two parish halls. Meeting dates are communicated through listings in both bulletins and a text messaging tree.
What does SASHYG do? SASHYG aims to build a community for Catholic teens. We begin and end each meeting with prayer. The time spent here allows youth to put into action what is learned in Wednesday night classes. There is time for socialization and learning through small group dialogue, movie nights, board games and speakers on various current events. Dodge ball tournaments have been a huge favorite this year. Group meetings are a great place to find out about parish and diocesan opportunities for retreats and other gatherings, such as the diocesan youth prolife event in Raleigh and the National Right to Life March in Washington DC. In addition to our Sunday night meetings we periodically attend Mass together followed by a meal at a restaurant or other fun event.
The youth group is involved in the greater community through multiple philanthropic activities as well. In the past year alone, our youth group has Christmas Caroled at St. Joseph’s, helped setup for Family Promise when St. Anthony houses the homeless, created crafts for nursing homes, and combated hunger through the CROP WALK, a Halloween food drive and baking for MANNA. We also know how to have fun. We opened this year with a party at Pinehurst Beach Club and ended last year with a pool party.
What can members of the parish do to help? Parishioners are encouraged to volunteer. Consider sharing a talent or interest during a group meeting or outside activity. We welcome your ideas and experience. You can support the youth group by buying SASHYG cookbooks and attending SASHYG fundraisers raises such as the election night spaghetti dinner. Money raised by the group fulfills charity promises of the group.
